Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY edition’s packaging, trailer revealed 15 March 2010 at 9:00 pm by kristomorganred

Not only does the Game of the Year edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum add TriOviz 3D, it comes with Batman and Joker-themed 3D glasses. They’re not exactly what you would imagine Batman and/or the Joker wearing to watch something in 3D, but they are decorated in the style of the two characters. They’re like one of those old Halloween costumes with the picture of the character you’re supposed to look like printed on the front.

In case you haven’t heard about this Arkham Asylum thing until now, you can see a trailer for the Game of the Year edition after the break. You’ll be able to pick it up on March 26 — but only if you’re in Europe, Asia, or Australia, as those are the only regions for which this edition has been announced.

+ Mortal Kombat is now streamable from Netflix By kristomorganred 04 March 2010 at 1:20 pm and have No Comments

Mortal Kombat is now streamable from Netflix screenshot

Now you — yes, you, hopeful tournament entrant — can return to Man Island thanks to the wonders of Netflix streaming technology. The first Mortal Kombat movie is up on Instant Watch, and can be viewed from this fine link.

Based on the opinions of more than 300,000 Netflix members, this movie is a solid 3.3 out of 5. Personally, I found the PG-13 level of violence to be a bit on the soft side and, well, boring. For gorehounds such as myself, it might be wise to watch Mortal Kombat alongside Podtoid’s commentary.

Hell, that’s strong advice for anyone thinking of watching this movie. For those with family members who are against unnecessary and constant dramatic flipping, it is best you have them leave the room before starting the stream up.

+ Activision report lists World of Warcraft as a ‘risk factor’ By kristomorganred 02 March 2010 at 8:00 pm and have No Comments

If there’s anything that all the chaos between Activision and Infinity Ward in the past 24 hours has taught us, it’s that no one is safe and dry under Bobby Kotick’s umbrella. And while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was one of Activision’s biggest earners, that hasn’t stopped the company from revamping the brand however it sees fit. So what about Activision’s other big game, Blizzard’s World of Warcraft? The same annual report released to the SEC yesterday that kicked off the Infinity Ward shakeup also mentions that Activision is worried about WoW becoming “obsolete,” and that the regulatory issues in China could affect the entire company’s bottom line.

So will we hear about Mike Morhaime being frogmarched off of the Blizzard campus? Not likely — the fears about WoW are all in a section of the report labeled “Risk Factors,” in which a company must disclose anything that could possibly go wrong with its financials in the future, just in case. In there, Activision worries about everything from credit card fraud to its ESRB ratings — WoW is mentioned a lot because it makes up most of the revenue (in fact, one of the worries is that Activision depends on WoW too much), but these are all worst case scenario guesses. The report admits that Blizzard did decrease its net revenues last year, but then credits that to no new releases in 2009 and interrupted licensing fees from China. Assuming Blizzard releases both Starcraft II and Cataclysm as planned in 2010, the odds are low that Activision will raise the axe in that direction.

+ Monday Mind Teasers: Blosics 2 By kristomorganred 22 February 2010 at 3:30 pm and have No Comments

Monday Mind Teasers: Blosics 2 screenshot

Do you like explosions? Of course you do. Pixel art adventure games are fun and all, but sometimes I just need digital destruction to keep me amused. Throw in some slingshot game design, particle scatter physics, 30 levels and a level editor, and and you’ve got Blosics 2.

Different sized ammo pellets cost you more points, and the more blocks you can knock off the screen, the more points you earn. Each level challenges you to earn 100 points before progressing on, and eventually different blocks (red blocks knocked off the screen deduct points) and obstacles are introduced to make things even more hectic and exciting. A few of the levels in the middle, and then a few more at the end, are incredibly gratifying. My two favorites are the bomb and fireworks level and the balancing seesaw level.

You can play Igrek Productions‘ game Blosics here on PlayedOnline. As always, leave your high scores in the comments below!

+ Monster Hunter Tri preorder gets Nintendo points card By kristomorganred 12 February 2010 at 12:30 pm and have No Comments

Monster Hunter Tri preorder gets Nintendo points card screenshot

Here’s a couple of nice little bonuses from GameStop for those looking to get Capcom’s Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii.

First off, reserve it now and when you check out (online or in-store), GameStop will take off $5. Nice little discount, eh? I remember the days when GameStop was about $5 more than everywhere else. Now they’re $5 cheaper on something. I like that.

On top of this is a GameStop exclusive Monster Hunter Tri themed Nintendo points card worth 500 points. Also available online and in-store, this is almost like another $5 off. Or a free game. Get Tomena Sanner!

Nice going, GameStop!

Monster Hunter Tri ships on April 6th.

+ MLB 10 The Show classic stadiums are pre-order bonus DLC By kristomorganred 26 January 2010 at 2:20 am and have No Comments

MLB 10 The Show classic stadiums are pre-order bonus DLC screenshot

In my December preview of MLB 10 The Show, I mentioned that the game will include a number of classic stadiums that are new to the MLB The Show franchise, such as the Polo Grounds and Forbes Field. The fact sheet for the game mentioned these old ballparks as being part of the game — but unfortunately, that’s only technically true. Yesterday, a post on the PlayStation.Blog explained that the PS3 version of MLB 10 will offer a total of six classic stadiums (check out screenshots of them in the gallery):

  • Shibe Park (Philadelphia Athletics/Phillies and others, 1909-1970)
  • Forbes Field (Pittsburgh Pirates and others, 1909-1970)
  • Polo Grounds (New York Giants and others, 1890-1964)
  • Crosley Field (Cincinnati Reds and others, 1912-1970)
  • Sportsman’s Park (St. Louis Browns/Cardinals and others, 1902-1966)
  • Griffith Stadium (Washington Senators and others, 1911-1961)

The six sports venues will be on the MLB 10 game disc. If you pre-order the game at GameStop, Amazon, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Buy.com, or J&R, you’ll get a free voucher with an unlock code for the stadiums. According to a reply from SCEA to a comment on the PS.Blog post, you will also be able to unlock the stadiums yourself — but you’ll have to achieve a Platinum Trophy in the game (that is, earn all of the game’s Trophies) in order to do so. (The MLB The Show games have been criticized in the past for their notoriously difficult-to-obtain Trophies.)

As someone who has no Platinum Trophies and rarely pre-orders games, I found this rather disconcerting. I contacted Sony San Diego to ask if there will be any other way to access these stadiums, and a PR rep told me that he believes that they “will be available for DLC at some point.” However, he could not confirm a release window at this time, so I’m left with the assumption that even if the stadium six-pack does eventually pop up on the PlayStation Store (whether for free or for purchase), it won’t be until some time has passed after MLB 10’s March 2nd release date.

So as it stands, your best bet is to pre-order MLB 10 if you want to play in the six ballparks listed above. It’s a safe move, though — the last two games, especially MLB 09, have been superb. “Always Buy The Show” indeed, eh?

+ A No More Heroes 2 panty-flash jump-cut bonanza of excite By kristomorganred 12 January 2010 at 2:30 pm and have No Comments

Every time I see that there is a new set of No More Heroes 2 videos on the internet, I expect to be let down. So far, that hasn’t happened. Though this latest set of videos doesn’t have a whole lot of new info, there is a flash of a new character, and even more flashes of panties and underboob. It should seem tacky, but the overarching creepy, fun filled, surrealist atmosphere that permeates each video manages to keeps things classy.

OK, maybe not classy, but at least no less tacky than Audrey Hepburn’s no-pants scene in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

It’s also encouraging to hear IGN’s Mark Bozon give the game such glowing praise, particularly its 8-bit jobs, cat exercises, cute ‘em up, and clothes shopping. Four hours in, and Mark’s spent so much time with the game’s side activities that he’s only bothered to beat two of the its (rumored) fifty bosses. This is coming from a guy who didn’t really like the original No More Heroes. I am very jealous of Mark Bozon right now.

Two more videos await you after the jump. I suggest you watch them all on the “Hi” setting.

+ Amazon deals: peripheral sale; $20 credit for $80 purchase By kristomorganred 30 December 2009 at 4:00 pm and have No Comments

Have your peripherals gotten dirty, like, just plain filthy? Well, don’t touch them! You could catch something. Instead, consider buying clean ones during Amazon’s peripheral sale. Controllers, adapters, wires, and even Xbox Points cards are included, with discounts ranging from 10-25 percent off regular prices. The sale doesn’t appear to have a clear end date, so you could have any number of days to take advantage.

In a separate promotion, Amazon is offering a $20 credit toward a future video game purchase (made by March 31) when spending at least $80 on select software. This promotion ends January 2, and the credit will be applied directly to your account after the items ship. Only one credit per household. Void where prohibited. Don’t stare directly into the sun. Always tip your waitress.

+ San Francisco arcade selling their arcade cabinets By kristomorganred 30 December 2009 at 11:30 am and have No Comments

San Francisco arcade selling their arcade cabinets screenshot

TILT is one of the last good things about the San Francisco Metreon. Sure, their movie theater is nice, but a good arcade will always trump any theater. TILT has some redemption machines, but the majority of the place is covered with arcade cabinets. They have a good selection of fighting, racing and shooting games and most of them are games that you will actually drop quarters into. Most of the arcade cabinets are also on sale.

Don’t worry, TILT isn’t going out of business. They’re just selling the cabinets to try to make some extra profits during the holiday season. Nearly all the cabinets are on sale until the end of January and once the sale is over, you can still purchase the cabinets but the prices will go up.

The cheapest machines I saw there were two of the Resident Evil light-gun games going for $195 each. Yes, just $195. The screens weren’t the greatest quality, but the games were still playable. The most expensive machine at TILT is the Tekken 6 cabinet for $20,000. The average machines ran between $1,500 to $3,000 though and only a few of the machines actually go over $10,000.

The machines I know most people will give a damn about are the fighting ones such as Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter III Third Strike and SNK vs Capcom 2. Each of those are on sale for about $2,500 — Not bad considering how rare and popular those games are.

The gallery below has about half of what TILT actually offers. If you’re a San Francisco native, and if you have a few grand to blow, then I highly suggest you go see what TILT has on sale.
