PSA: Beware of StarCraft 2 beta scammers 18 February 2010 at 9:45 pm by Pradaytap

As you may have heard, the StarCraft II beta is now officially underway. Right now, beta invites are streaming to email inboxes everywhere. As a result, scammers are out in full force as well, hoping to phish some account details from unsuspecting Blizzard fans. In order to help you avoid this potential trick, our friends at WoW.com have provided a simple guide for determining if a beta invite is legitimate (the one shown above is a gag made by us, incidentally). Simply follow the steps below to see if your beta invite is the real deal:

  • Type battle.net into your browser (no typos) and it will go to the secure battle.net site appropriate to your region.
  • Enter your account info.
  • Under Manage My Games, choose Add or Upgrade a Game.
  • Enter the Beta Key provided in the email where it says Enter Game Key.
  • Press Add Game.

If the beta is properly added to your account, you’re good to go. If the beta key doesn’t work, or if the email directs you somewhere else to obtain a key, it’s not a real invite. WoW.com advises users to forward any fake invites to hacks@blizzard.com.

+ Microsoft’s X10: What you can expect today By Pradaytap 11 February 2010 at 5:20 am and have No Comments

Microsoft's X10: What you can expect today screenshot

Microsoft’s holding its big media event X10 today in San Francisco, and we’ll be there to bring you all of the coverage and announcements starting at 1:30 Pacific today.

But what can you expect? Here are the games we’re told to expect: Alan Wake; Crackdown 2; Fable III; Halo: Reach; Splinter Cell: Conviction; Final Fantasy XIII; Dead Rising 2; Lost Planet 2; Ghost Recon; Perfect Dark XBLA; Game Room on Xbox LIVE; and more.

We’re expecting to get “super pissed” by Fable III, and word around town is we’ll finally get a solid release date for Alan Wake. Of course, that won’t be all — we expect some surprises, too.

Coverage starts at 1:30 Pacific. Hope you wore comfortable pants today.

+ Red Dead Redemption pre-order bonuses announced By Pradaytap 10 February 2010 at 11:54 am and have No Comments

Red Dead Redemption’s many, many pre-order bonuses are now detailed on the game’s official website, and we can’t imagine anyone will be prepared for the barrage of options listed when you click that link. No less than eight different pre-order bonuses, split between ten different US and UK retailers have been dreamed up by marketing. In typical Rockstar fashion, the practice of “exclusive” bonus content has become excessive bonus content.

Among the options listed are the “Golden Guns Weapon Pack” (more “Fame” per kill), from Amazon, which also comes with a $10 Amazon gift card; the “War Horse,” a steed that Rockstar claims can’t be bested by any other horse in the game, only available from Best Buy and HMV; and the “Deadly Assassin Outfit” from UK retailer Game (and maybe GameStop, if the getup wins the vote — uh-huh, there’s a pre-order vote). So yeah, we’re going with the Amazon option, too.

+ Fairytale Fights DLC hitting PSN on February 11 By Pradaytap 10 February 2010 at 3:00 am and have No Comments

Fairytale Fights DLC hitting PSN on February 11 screenshot

Most of you have commented that you weren’t a huge fan of Playlogic’s Fairytale Fights. That’s fine, but maybe it’s because it was missing Puss in Boots.

Playlogic has announced that “Treasure Pack 1″ DLC will be hitting PlayStation Network on February 11. The pack includes new characters playable in story mode (Bones, Princess Afia, Grandma Red, Puss in Boots), as well as new player-vs-player arenas — “Time to Die,” “Rooftop Rumble” and “Cannon Ball Bay.”

Xbox 360 Fairytale Fights players (fairytale fighters?), don’t worry — Playlogic says this DLC pack is coming to Xbox LIVE Marketplace “at a later date.”

+ Need more Dante’s Inferno products? Try the Circle Cycle By Pradaytap 22 January 2010 at 3:30 pm and have No Comments

Need more Dante's Inferno products? Try the Circle Cycle screenshot

It might only have been a few hours since we last told you about EA’s latest Dante’s Inferno promotional stunt, but I couldn’t help wanting to post this commercial they put up for the “Circle Cycle,” which is apparently that “big wheels like cycle” product the viral marketing “tips” hinted at this afternoon.

It looks just like a legitimate toy commercial, including the overenthusiastic narrator and children looking hopped-up on something more potent than sugar. Plus, that kid’s Dante costume looks like the in-game character model. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Circle Cycle made an appearance in the actual game.

For my part I almost hope this would make it to market. Then someone could buy it an use it in this year’s Big Wheel Rally.

Check out the video below.

+ Microsoft at CES: Natal, Classic Arcade Games By Pradaytap 06 January 2010 at 11:29 pm and have No Comments

natal400Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer gave the keynote address at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Wednesday night, speaking a bit about the future of the Xbox 360.

As anyone with a single functioning brain cell could have already told you, Project Natal, Microsoft’s new camera-based motion controller, will be released during the 2010 holiday season.

During the keynote, another one of those funny little sentences popped up again: Engadget reported that executive Robbie Bach said that Natal will “work with your existing console.” We heard the same weird phrasing at E3, and that was quickly followed up with a story from 1up that spelled out their take on why Microsoft would be saying such strange things: A new Xbox may be in the works.

Microsoft's gameroom

Game Room for the Xbox 360 will let you build your own virtual arcade by buying classic games like Atari’s Tempest.

One more big announcement: Microsoft will debut a new service called Game Room. Like Nintendo’s Virtual Console for Wii and Sony’s PlayStation Archives, it’ll let you download classic games. Unlike those services, you can access those games through a 3-D virtual world interface, using your Xbox 360 Avatar.

You can buy games for $5 each, which will let you play them on your Xbox 360 and Windows PC. Or you can pay $3 to play the game on a single platform. $3 per game, every game? That’s a pretty awesome deal, considering that classic arcade games on Wii cost anywhere from $5 to $10.

There’s also a pay-per-play option in which you can pay 50 cents to demo a game once. Microsoft says you can invite your Xbox friends over to check out the games in your Game Room, although the press release doesn’t quite make it clear exactly how much access they’ll have to your virtual goods.

Here’s the best part. Although the service will launch this spring with 30 games from the arcade, Atari 2600, and Intellivision, Microsoft says that within three years the number of games will be up to 1,000. That’s thousand. That’s awesome.

+ Gaming icons get created for ModNation Racers By Pradaytap 20 December 2009 at 5:00 am and have No Comments

Gaming icons get created for ModNation Racers screenshot

The beta for United Front Games ModNation Racers has only been going on for a few days, but those invited to the already have their creative juices flowing.

Using the game’s extensive character customization (or “Mods,” as they’re called in the game), creators do what they tend to do when handed such tools — re-create their favorite gaming icons. I found everything from creations of Old Snake from Metal Gear Solid 4 to God of War’s Kratos, from Nintendo’s Luigi to a Mega Man with ears.

While the authenticity of the Mods vary in quality, the ingenuity to bring them to life should be commended. To imagine, these are only creations made with the limited parts United Front Games has made available in the beta. I can’t wait to see what people come up with when the game launches next year.

Hit the jump to check out a sampling of some of the creations I found; all images were taken using the in-game photo mode.

+ Win a signed Demon’s Soul poster by winning it! By Pradaytap 16 December 2009 at 6:01 pm and have No Comments

Win a signed Demon's Soul poster by winning it! screenshot

Demon’s Souls is an awesome game, and we’ve got awesome prizes for fans of the sexy PS3 RPG. Your very own Jim Sterling received three Demon’s Souls posters a couple of weeks ago, and pledged to donate two of them to Destructoid’s 25 days of giving

The posters are officially signed by … a guy … and feature the cover art for the standard edition of the game. They look pretty swanky and any Demon’s Souls fan would be proud to have one emblazoned on their bathroom wall. I’ll be sending these out personally, so this contest will unfortunately (like the game) be for US readers only. Sorry, but f*ck me paying shipping out of my own pocket for a worldwide address.

So, you want to win one of these saucesome posters? Entry is simple. In order to receive your signed Demon’s Souls poster, all you have to do is win it! That’s right! Simply win a signed Demon’s Souls poster, and you will receive a signed Demon’s Souls poster. How awesome is that?

So, what are you waiting for? Start trying to win it! You have until 11:59 PM CST tonight to win at winning!

+ Dante’s Inferno comic descends into retail By Pradaytap 09 December 2009 at 8:15 pm and have No Comments

In case you were wondering what Dante’s Inferno would be like if it were made into a book, EA has just announced that the first issue of the Wildstorm comic book based on Visceral’s upcoming action game has shipped to retailers. The first installment of the six-issue miniseries, for which the full cover art can be seen after the break, provides the background for Dante’s demon-slayin’: the murder of Beatrice, and Dante’s subsequent trip into the abyss to rescue her soul.

If the concept is something you’re into, and if the cover art captures your attention, why not swing by your local comic shop on the way to Hell?
