Modern Warfare 2 hits 25m players, DLC news this week 08 March 2010 at 3:30 pm by Veiplosse

As revealed in a tweet by Infinity Ward’s own Robert Bowling, Modern Warfare 2 has surpassed the 25 million unique online players mark. That figure includes all three platforms, with Xbox 360 leading the way, followed by PlayStation 3, and then PC.

There’s a theory going around that says some people only purchase videogames from established franchises and avoid new intellectual properties at all costs. MW2 just proved it right — the direct follow-up is “dominating COD4’s numbers,” according to Bowling.

The last bit of news comes in the form of a tease: we are told to expect information about the first add-on pack (release date, possibly more) during this week. Oh hai, GDC! Forgot you were going on this week.

+ Zen Bound 2 announced for the iPad, images look fantastic By Veiplosse 05 March 2010 at 10:20 am and have No Comments

Zen Bound 2 announced for the iPad, images look fantastic screenshot

Secret Exit will be on the list of developers looking to put out a game close to the iPad’s launch on April 3rd. Earlier this afternoon, the studio, who was responsible for the App Store’s innovative Zen Bound, announced Zen Bound 2 a “sequel and a revision” to the original title. Details were light, but do expect more Ghost Monkey tracks and revitalized versions of the original game’s levels.

Alongside the announcement, Secret Exit provided us with some images taken from the game. As you can see, there’s nothing to complain about when it comes to the iPad’s visual fidelity. The Cupertino tablet has a bit of muscle, eh?

+ Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin: Rock Band By Veiplosse 12 February 2010 at 6:40 am and have No Comments

Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin: Rock Band screenshot

This week’s episode of Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin’ is about Rock Band. Sort of. I don’t think Ash and I have ever played Rock Band together, come to think of it.

A lot of people also seem to get some sort of incestuous vibe from this episode, which really isn’t intended. Just throwing that out there.

Either way, though, hope you enjoy it.

+ Artist Pulls Vinyl Fantasy 7 Mash-Up (Update) By Veiplosse 04 February 2010 at 12:11 pm and have No Comments

Team Teamwork, reacting to a copyright infringement claim, has removed the videogame-themed mash-up album Vinyl Fantasy 7 from the website Bandcamp.

Vinyl Fantasy 7 mashes up hip-hop artists like Jay-Z and Ghostface Killah with Nobuo Uematsu’s hit score from the 1997 videogame Final Fantasy VII. Artist “Team Teamwork” is Tim Jacques, a 24-year-old graphic designer from the Boston area.

Jacques doesn’t know who filed the claim against him. “I received the notice with Bandcamp as the proxy,” he told Wired.com by email.

He had been allowing fans to make donations via Bandcamp — a ploy that netted the artist “literally tens of dollars over the last weekend, and over all a little under a hundred.” He wasn’t exactly rolling in the dough.

Still, copyright laws apply whether you’re making money or not. Jacques just assumed that hip-hop artists might be a little more easygoing about sampling. “Mixtapes by their very nature are bootlegs,” he said. “Aside from the whole DJ Drama fiasco a few years ago, the law has been very lenient toward that media.”

Jacques, too, understands that copyright claims are something of a rite of passage among cut-and-paste musicians. “It seems like all the big deal guys, except Girl Talk, have been hit with some kind of legal notice.”

Despite the fact that Bandcamp is no longer hosting his files, Jacques is confident that fans will be able to find his records. “It’s impossible to remove something from the internet,” he says. “So, even if I’m not distributing it, somebody out there probably is.”

The first order of business for Jacques is to find “a way to distribute my music without the site I’ve been using for months.” Then he’ll move on to composing the tunes for his non-game-related project, The Good-ass Remixes Vol. 2.

Note: This story has been corrected from the original version. The original story said that Bandcamp had pulled the album, but Tim Jacques says he pulled it voluntarily. Wired.com regrets the error.

+ Dante’s St. Lucia DLC Brings Online Co-Op, Player-Created Content [Dlc] By Veiplosse 02 February 2010 at 10:20 am and have No Comments

A trailer shipping with the retail version of Dante’s Inferno reveals the Trials of St. Lucia downloadable content, adding a new character, online cooperative play, and player-created trials to EA’s epic action game in April.

An Australian Kotakuite who purchased the Death Edition of Dante’s Inferno for the PlayStation 3 tipped us off to the Trials of St. Lucia DLC, introduced in this video by senior producer Hans ten Cate. The pack, available on April 29th, adds a whole new dimension of community involvement to the game, as well as a new playable character in the form of the angelic St. Lucia of Syracuse, a character mentioned in the “Divine Comedy.”

Players will be able to create custom trials, testing their skills against waves of enemies, some exclusive to the St., Lucia DLC. Once their creations are complete, they’ll be able to upload them to the Dante’s Inferno community, where they’ll be rated and ranked.

From single-player action game to community-driven content creation, all in one DLC pack. An interesting move on EA’s part….but why couldn’t these features have shipped with retail version? Seems like they would have made for a much more attractive package to those looking for a little more than an extended hack-and-slash adventure.

Then there’s the question of price. The trailer doesn’t list one, simply instructing players to download the DLC on April 29th. Hopefully that indicates a free expansion.

We’ve contacted EA for more details, as well as the reasoning behind this game-changing DLC.

+ THQ making Wheel of Fortune, JEOPARDY! games By Veiplosse 01 February 2010 at 9:40 am and have No Comments

THQ making Wheel of Fortune, JEOPARDY! games screenshot

THQ and Sony Pictures have signed a considerably huge multi-year licensing deal that grants the former full rights to create games based upon the ludicrously popular game shows JEOPARDY! and Wheel of Fortune. Obviously, these games are primarily being made for the Wii and DS. Y’know, so the idiots will buy them.

The deal grants THQ the ability to publish these games on multiple systems, so you can possibly expect from Natal-flavored stupidity to arrive at some point as well. THQ plans to release the first games based on these properties later in the year. Let’s all look forward to that, shall we?

Seriously though, while we sane individuals couldn’t care less, this is a massive coup for THQ. The publisher will most likely be able to print money with this agreement, and if that means more cash for hot properties like Dawn of War and Darksiders in the future, then it’s a good deal all round, right?

AGOURA HILLS, Calif., Feb 01, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI) and Sony Pictures Consumer Products, Inc. today announced two multi-year licensing agreements granting THQ the exclusive worldwide rights to develop and publish video games based on Sony Pictures Television’s popular game show properties, “JEOPARDY!” and “Wheel of Fortune”.

The new agreements give THQ rights to publish interactive games based on the two properties for the Wii(TM) video game system, Nintendo DS(TM) and Nintendo DSi(TM), and grants THQ options for additional platforms.

“We are excited to add two iconic properties such as ‘JEOPARDY!’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune’ to our Kids, Family and Casual Games portfolio,” said Doug Clemmer, Executive Vice President, THQ Kids, Family and Casual Games. “The opportunity to implement new features such as Wii Speak(TM) will re-imagine how these games are played and engage fans with a whole new level of interactivity.”

“‘JEOPARDY!’ and ‘Wheel of Fortune’ are extraordinarily popular across the globe and it was important for us to find a partner with an international vision,” said Mark Caplan, Vice President Licensing, Sony Pictures Consumer Products. “THQ’s focus and proven success within the family market made them the most logical team to bring these

renowned properties to new platforms, and we look forward to working with them to create family-friendly interactive experiences.”

THQ plans to release the first video games under this agreement later this year.

+ Tekken: The Movie: The Trailer: The Post By Veiplosse 15 January 2010 at 7:45 pm and have No Comments

We live in a world that’s so full of daily tragedy and unpredictable horror that when something happens exactly the way we thought it would, we find reason to celebrate. Even if it’s a bad thing, it’s an inspiring reminder that even in a universe of chaos there are beautiful, comforting pockets of stability.

There’s a trailer for the live action Tekken movie after the break, and it does not in any way look like a good movie. Now, hit your knees and thank the stars.

+ Xbox 360 Platinum Hits lineup adds Halo Wars, Orange Box and others By Veiplosse 14 January 2010 at 6:15 pm and have No Comments

Xbox.com has listed several new games as Platinum Hits, including Fable II (aka Game of the Year Edition), Halo Wars, Left 4 Dead, The Orange Box, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Ninja Gaiden II, Kung-Fu Panda, Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, Sonic The Hedgehog, and Sonic Unleashed.

A Microsoft PR agent couldn’t confirm the full list of new Platinum Hits (are we missing any above?), but said that if a game is listed as such on Xbox.com, it’s a Platinum Hits title. The changes seem to have taken effect on major retailer sites, as GameStop and Amazon now reflect the discounted Platinum prices (if not always the the Platinum Hits branding), which range from $20-30.

With Orange Box requiring only one Jackson ($20), it’s now literally a crime to not own it. Conversely, if you’re dead-set on committing a crime, buy someone Sonic The Hedgehog or Sonic Unleashed at $20 each.

[Thanks, Stephen]

+ The best of WoW.com: January 6-13, 2010 By Veiplosse 14 January 2010 at 2:00 am and have No Comments

It’s been a busy week over at WoW.com and in the WoW world. We’ve heard from our sources late last week that the internal friends and family alpha will be beginning for the next World of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm. And while this has lots of people excited, chances are you probably will never get in — unless you know someone.

There were also lots of other interesting stories this past week, from the WoW movie being pushed up thanks to Spider-Man’s demise, to security holes and care packages, to papercrafts that prove none of us have any real artistic talent.

The best of WoW.com for the week is after the break.

+ Rebellion refuses to ‘water down’ Aliens vs. Predator, readying demo By Veiplosse 10 January 2010 at 1:30 pm and have No Comments

In a recent interview with AvPGalaxy, Rebellion Studios’ Martin Kennedy and Alex Moore openly spoke their minds regarding last month’s Australian ratings fiasco with Aliens vs. Predator before revealing news of an upcoming demo for the game. “People who want the game will get [it] imported, it’s not going to hurt us … if anything it’s been a bit of decent publicity,” Kennedy said. “We’re not going to water down the game for countries that can’t treat adults like adults,” continued Moore.

Moore even went as far as to compare Australia’s ban-happy government (as of late, at least) to past situations with Germany. “Germany’s always one of those places that we’ve known it was going to be difficult because the first one [game] got banned in Germany as well.” When pressed on the subject of a demo, however, the duo were more careful in their wording. “There will be a demo …that’s all we can say,” Moore confirmed. Considering the game is still on schedule for an “early 2010” release (maybe February?), we’re hoping that the demo will be arriving sooner rather than later.
