Role-playing juggernaut Square Enix and casual gaming king PopCap are collaborating on a new puzzle RPG called Gyromancer for Xbox 360 and PC.

Gyromancer is a cool puzzle/RPG hybrid that uses Bejeweled Twist’s game mechanic at the heart of its battle system,” said Jason Kapalka, PopCap co-founder and chief creative officer in a press release Thursday.

Infinite Interactive already beat PopCap and Square Enix to the punch with Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords — a game that cloned the vanilla flavor of Bejeweled as a mechanism for combat. But while Puzzle Quest was a novel hybrid, the quality of the game’s story and match-three puzzles was merely acceptable. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when two gamemakers that truly excel at RPG storytelling and puzzle-game balancing match wits.

The story of Gyromancer follows hero Rivel, a rebel leader who explores the enchanted Aledemona Wood with the aid of beasts he’s defeated and captured in battle.
