Rare: ‘Who Knows" Why Donkey Kong 64 Hasn’t Hit the VC [Virtual Console] 15 October 2009 at 12:30 am by treesmon

Who knows? Maybe it has something to do with Rare being owned by Microsoft, and it and Nintendo being unable to decide who divides the loot. But yeah, answering a reader question, they don’t know what the deal is either.

Asked in the latest RARE Scribes mailbag why Donkey Kong 64 isn’t on the Wii Virtual Console, the guy delegated to answer this gave a throw-up-your-hands questions that sounds like earlier answers regarding Goldeneye and whether we’ll ever see it again.

I have no idea why DK64 hasn’t shown up yet, and whether Jetpac would still be in there or they’d replace it with Mario’s Cement Factory (which ate about three years of my life as a child) or something. Or maybe a single-screen 2D shooty version of Jet Race would be more appropriate. Who knows? Not us, obviously, or we wouldn’t be sitting here pitching clueless alternatives.

Sounds like a “don’t ask me, I just work here,” type of response. And who can blame ‘em?

+ What’s the impression you get from the … [From Comments] By BefBoTlylaway 14 October 2009 at 9:23 am and have No Comments

What’s the impression you get from the Kotaku staff? If I were to compare them to anything it’d be a typical family, with us as the pets :P The majority of the staff are the kids who kept pestering their parents til they finally caved and let them get some pets (us). Generally everyone shares the task of looking after them equally and we all have our own favourites. Luke’s occasional flame-bait posts being akin to teasing the pets because he’s a little bored, Bashcraft sneaks down at night to sneak us some extra food, and Owen takes us for walks on weekends. AJ is the enthusiastic little sister and the Mikes are the older brothers who pretend they aren’t as interested in the pets but still take good care of them. Crecente and Totilo are the long suffering parents, who have to look after the pets when the kids’ interest wanes temporarily, as it is wont to do. Their care is perhaps a bit more methodical and deliberate than that of the children, but all the more appreciated because of it. Leigh is the big sister who’s gone away to university, but whenever she comes back home for the holidays all we all crowd around her like she’s Snow White in the forest and get attention lavished on us for a little while. Tim is the friendly uncle who is kind of a little crazy but we all like him anyway because he has nice snacks and surprises in his pockets that he likes to share. What do you think, strangely fitting or am I just a little crazy? I’ve even got a mental image of some of the more prolific commenters, like Arch as the grumpy old dog set in his ways and Lily as something small, hyperactive and lovable, like a ferret.

+ Divinity II’s Trailer Ain’t Exactly Divine… But There Are Dragons [Clips] By IgorVortoner 14 October 2009 at 3:30 am and have No Comments

Dragons will sell me almost anything — video games, clothing, you name it. I’ve got to say, though, I didn’t think I’d extend that to letter openers until I saw this.

You could seriously injure somebody without even unsheathing this thing. The only thing it’s missing is jeweled eyeballs. Now all I need are letters to open…

Oh yeah, here’s a Divinity II: Ego Draconis trailer:

+ Final Two Characters Revealed for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom [Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom] By MutPseusy 13 October 2009 at 9:20 pm and have No Comments

In my day, we knew him as Jason. Of course, that was in the U.S., watching Battle of the Planets. But in Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, he is Joe the Condor, and he’s Tatsunoko’s last entrant. But who is Capcom’s?

From the Mega Man continuity, it’s Zero – from Mega Man X, or Rockman X since we’re deferring to the Japanese titling here. Zero’s official announcement for the North American localization of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom confirms a rumor about a month old. IGN got the exclusive reveal earlier today, and has video of both characters in action.

I’ll be flying out to New York next week to spend some time in Gawker’s offices and meet with some folks. I’ll also be harassing Totilo up close and personal.

The best part? Maybe we can do the podcast live from the same room for a change!

+ New Compliment: Football Player’s Performance Is Beyond Video Games [Superlatives] By timdgf 13 October 2009 at 4:00 pm and have No Comments

There are many things in this world — movies with lots of explosions, for example — that people will say are “just like a video game.” Today we have an example of something so amazing it is beyond video games.

The report of this greater-than-gaming feat appeared in Saturday’s Syracuse Post-Standard. The newspaper reported that Ismail Brooks, a tailback in the Section III high school Auburn, has scored 25 touchdowns in his first six games.

The paper noted that such a performance seems to be out of a video game, but quotes Brooks’ cousin and teammate, Julaun Richardson as saying: “Sometimes, you never see people score seven touchdowns with one player in the easiest level of video games… It’s ridiculous what Ismail is doing. I knew he was that good, but I never knew he was this good.”

Congratulations to the football player for his great stats. And congratulations to the Post-Standard for introducing a novel concept: The action in real life that is so amazing that it couldn’t have even happened in a video game.

+ What If Classic Games Had Achievements? [Achievement Unlocked] By luis69 13 October 2009 at 10:26 am and have No Comments

Achievements and trophies are a relatively new phenomenon in the world of gaming, but what if they weren’t? Gamerpaper takes a look at the achievements that might have been.

Duck Hunt, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mario Kart, and Mortal Kombat are just a few of the classic games that Gamerpaper gives the achievement treatment, to varying degrees of funny. Button mashers will enjoy the Mortal Kombat “No Luck” achievement, which requires that you actually do a move intentionally. I’m not sure the Roller Coaster Tycoon achievement that requires you to create a coaster that ends instead of killing the riders is realistic, and the TMNT “Leonardo? Psh…” achievement means nothing to me, as I was always a Donatello fan, but all and all its an excellent selection of achievements that makes people in video game website comment sections want to add their own *hint hint*.

+ Japanese Retail Employee Says Xbox 360 Having Rough Time [Only In Japan] By scousyKeets 13 October 2009 at 4:00 am and have No Comments

Xbox Japan has never had an easy time in The Land of the Rising Sun. Last year, with titles like Tales of Vesperia, the company saw some bright spots. This year has been somewhat grim.

Even with the recent Xbox 360 price, Microsoft only moved a little over 4,000 consoles in the most recent sales tally.

According to a Japanese game shop employee’s personal blog, the individual thought that Microsoft had some big titles to show at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. “But all in all, there was nothing,” the retail blogger writes. Sure, there is Forza 3, but that game has already been announced.

“This year, the big, eagerly anticipated titles are Final Fantasy XIII on the PS3, New Super Mario Bros. on the Wii and Zelda, on the 360, there’s not much of anything.”

(Note: Not sure why Zelda is mentioned here — it could simply be an error or a reference to upcoming Zelda Nintendo DS title Spirit Tracks.)

“It might be very hard to change the domestic trend,” the clerk says. “I really feel that it’s too late in Japan which seems to be bailing.”

The clerk wraps up his post, saying that perhaps from now on the Xbox 360 might have a shrinking presence in retail shops.

+ Of Course Modern Warfare 2 Avatar Goods Are Coming [Xbox 360] By Wobiddeve 12 October 2009 at 8:30 pm and have No Comments

Xbox 360 owners, calm your fears. Soon, your Xbox 360 Avatar will reflect your passion for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, says Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling. I know, it was touch and go there for a minute.

Bowling said via his Twitter feed this weekend that he’s “not sure we’ll be doing any Avatar rewards, but we are making avatar items. With some free ones hopefully.” Free ones!! That’s the kind of Avatar thing I can see myself investing the time to download. Too bad (potentially) about the lack of Avatar rewards, as that’s a nice little perk for the serious fan.

+ The Lady is a Spider in Dragon Age: Origins [Spider Tits] By warscdc 12 October 2009 at 8:00 pm and have No Comments

Not to say Demerol, or whatever its name is, is a patriarchal society, but when the humans send two dudes and two females to go hike up K2, guess who’s not going to be fully dressed for the weather.

Oh, they’re not just there for eye candy. While one woman headshots orc zombies with her bow and does a full back layout from a crumbling stone pillar, the other turns into a giant anti-personnel spider. Then Tiamat swoops in to regulate and Spider-Lady shapeshifts back and totally hadoukens it.

I’m not kidding, I’m so in the bag for this game it’s not funny. Dragon Age: Origins gets here Nov. 3, and I can’t wait.
